Proposed Amendment to Athletic Eligibility Policy Information form

At Box Elder Schools, we believe participation in athletics is a privilege that supports student growth, responsibility, and pride. Athletics should reinforce — not replace — our expectations for academic effort, consistent attendance, and positive engagement in school.

Currently, eligibility resets at the end of each athletic season. The proposed amendment ensures that students remain accountable for their academic performance and attendance between seasons and across school years. This change promotes consistency, encourages continuous effort, and strengthens the connection between classroom success and extracurricular participation.

Our goal is to:

Promote regular school attendance year-round

Encourage academic responsibility beyond a single season

Reinforce that athletics and academics go hand-in-hand

Support students in developing long-term habits of commitment and accountability

We value the voice of our students, families, staff, and community members. Please review the proposed amendment below and provide your feedback.


Proposed Amendment to Eligibility Policy
Date: February 17, 2026

Continuous Eligibility Between Athletic Seasons
Add the following section under “Eligibility / Good Standing”:

Eligibility Between Athletic Seasons
In order to promote consistent attendance, academic accountability, and positive student engagement, eligibility requirements shall apply between athletic seasons as well as during active participation.

Academic Eligibility Between Seasons
Students must maintain academic good standing between athletic seasons in order to be eligible for participation in their next sport. Eligibility does not automatically reset when a season ends. Students who finish a season academically ineligible or on probation must regain eligibility prior to participating in the next athletic season.

Attendance Eligibility Between Seasons
Students are expected to maintain regular school attendance between athletic seasons. Excessive unexcused absences, truancy, or failure to attend school between seasons may result in a student being deemed ineligible for participation in the next athletic season.

Probation Status Carryover
Students who enter the end of a season on academic or attendance probation may not begin game participation for a probation period of two weeks in the next sport until eligibility is restored in accordance with the school’s eligibility requirements.

Spring to Fall Eligibility
Eligibility expectations apply across school years. Students participating in spring sports must maintain academic and attendance eligibility through the end of the school year in order to be eligible to participate in fall sports. If a student is deemed ineligible at the end of the school year, they will start fall sports with a three week probation period of when school starts. The Athletic Director or Administration will make the final determination and will look at attendance and effort in the classroom for the beginning of the school year.

Administrative Discretion
The Principal and/or Athletic Director retain discretion to review individual circumstances and make determinations regarding eligibility in cases of verified extenuating circumstances.
